Antique Fra Angelico Trumpeting Angels
Antique, 19th century, hand gilded Trumpeting Angels on a gold ground, in a gilded antique frame after the artist Guido de Pietro
Guido de Pietro (1395 - 1455). After entering the Dominican order, Guido was named Fra Giovanni. However, the Domican brothers grew to call him "Fra Angelico" because of his beautiful paintings of Angels. His most famous patron was Cosimo de Medici of Florence and he is most recognized for his famous paintings, The Annunciation and, The Adoration of the Maji. In 1433 he was commissioned to paint a Madonna for the the Linaioli, a Florentine guild. This Madonna became known as the Tabernacle. His famous "musical angels" adorn the outer edges of the Tabernacle. Described as neither male or female but celestial beings of great joy.
The celestial Angels in this piece are wearing colorful, graceful robes with hand gilded accents. The halos and trumpets have gilded accents as well. This beautiful round, ornate, antique frame was made by Trowbridge and Jennings, Auburn NY. in the late 19th century and the original label is still attached. Circa 1885 to 1895. It measures approximately 9 3/4" and the image is approximately 5 1/2" .
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition. No fading, no staining, no tears. The frame has some crackling to the gesso which is normal on frames of this age. There is some overall wear to the gilding but more pronounced around the glass from cleaning. There are a few small chips in the frame but these are quite small. The back has very old scotch tape holding the original label in place. I took photographs from all angles so you can see the details and the wear that I described. Please look closely at my photographs as I do consider them as part of my description. This is from my own collection. I repair, restore and gild antique frames and chose to leave this as is, because the issues I described, are not detracting and I don't want my antique frames to look "new". If you are not happy with your purchase, you may return it within 14 days for a full refund minus shipping charges. Buyer pays return shipping charges. You must email me ASAP to inform me of the return and the item must be returned in the same condition is was sent.
INSURANCE: I carry a private insurance policy which is significantly less expensive than Post Office insurance and I can handle the claim for you. If you find the need to file a claim, you must keep all the packing materials and boxes with your item and contact me immediately. Pictures and a signed affidavit will be required.
