Antique Russian Icon Holy Virgin Joy of All Who Sorrow w/Saints c.1800sDescription:
Antique Russian icon depicting several Russian Orthodox religious motifs including the Holy Virgin - the image in the middle.
This is a very special subject in Russian iconography, specific to Eastern Orthodox Church. There are many variations of Holy Virgin iconography with different names and themes. The inscription on top reads "Всехъ скорбящихъ радость" in Russian or "Joy of All Who Sorrow". There are eight other motifs on the icon - the top one shows the so-called "Deesis" - three images: of Holy Virgin, of Acsession of Jesus and of John the Baptist. Some other images include St.George and other Saints.
Painted with egg tempera
on wooden board - interesting detailed painting. It is not a traditional Russian iconography or academical work of art (another style of Russian icons). It is the third icon style often called "village style" - a work of a icon painters from a small monastery or a workshop at a church in small village. A beautiful work close to naive art. Based on the wood condition and also the style I date it to mid-1800s.
The icon measures 12" by 11". It is in good condition - there is some minor paint losses, but no losses to the board
PLease note - this is an original icon from over 150 years old. Not a fake or copy.
