    Description

    Russian icon - Christ Child with Mother of God - Mother of God icon is holding the Christ Child. Nicely painted with egg tempra and gesso on wood. Surrounded by brass/oklad rizza with stunning repousse work.Unlike many icons showing Mother and Child, this icon incorporates the Child's hand as a separate cut out over the Mothers heart instead., Time and possibly candles have added a patina to the painting that has not been restored, perhaps suggesting greater authenticity.Provenance of many icons is difficult to accurately determine without documentation of origin, signature and date. Russian icons were originally found in homes, churches, even shops battlefield hospitals and probably dates from mid 1800's. The wooden backing upon which the icon has been painted has bowed slightly over time. Dimensions are 15/16" x 7- 1/4" by 8-15/16".
