    Description

For sale is one two-piece, non-dug, cuff- or kepi-size (15 mm) Civil War era US Navy officers' button with the anchor fluke in front of the eagle's wing
    (Albert's NA113 and Tice's NA230As).
With an iron bar shank and
    a
depressed-mark "PAT JAN 19 1864 / PWG BOST" backmark, this button is an example of Bostonian
    "
Philip William Gengembre's 1864 invention combining a tubular rubber spring with the button body and a locking catch" (Tice p.60).  This is one of the few backmarks that bear a Civil War date.
Tice writes on page 37 that "the French Self-Fastening Button Company assembled buttons with the [Philip William] Gengembre backmark during 1864-1865.  Front dies for these buttons appear to have been made by Scovill."
This example is in very good to excellent condition with no pushes, a small discoloration on the rim above the eagle's head, a weakly struck backmark and a straight shank.
For shipping, we use well-padded boxes, typically ship same- or next-day, and always combine costs on multiple lots (USPS insurance required over 0).
