DESCRIPTION:
Retablo of St. Francis of Assisi. Hispano/Hispanic Icon.
Painted front & back. The front features the saint, but the back features only flowers. Very colorful. Type of paint unknown; it’s sealed with a kind of shellac or varnish.
The heavy wood pieces are nailed together with large nails (the nails were painted at the same time as the original artwork).
The wood plank has beveled edges.
The bottom is footed with two metal discs.
Aged patina (artistically created). But there may also be some natural patina (age spots/marks? See photos for some spotting/mottling).
A contemporary representation of the beautiful character of Saint Francis of Assisi (
San Francisco - San Francesco d’Assisi
), the patron of animals, merchants & ecology. His feast day: October 4th.
According to the Spanish Colonial Arts Museum of Santa Fe, NM, retablos are:
Flat wooden panels painted on one side with Christian devotional images. The tradition of retablos was brought to New Mexico by Franciscan friars in the 15th century. The Spanish Colonial Arts Society was formed in 1924, preserving this unique New Mexico tradition.
Some of the imagery depicted:
Birds, crows, ravens, dove, rosary beads, stigmata, necklace, dog golden retriever, halo, flowers.
This sale is for the retablo, only (not any other items that appear in the photos).
CONDITION:
It was purchased by my family, and always kept indoors, displayed inside the home.  I see no signs of damage. All original with no repairs.
